What you see in each building

In the Abbey a guide takes you round the coronation church and the royal and national graves, from the Coronation Chair to Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. In Parliament a second guide starts in Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the palace, shows the room where the monarch puts on the crown and robes before the State Opening, and then the chambers of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The listing notes photography is not allowed inside.

Big Ben is not part of it

This tour goes inside the Palace of Westminster but not up the Elizabeth Tower, the clock tower that holds Big Ben. Climbing the tower is a separate tour sold only by UK Parliament, with its own age limit and hundreds of steps; see can you tour Big Ben?. On this tour you see the tower from Parliament Square.

When Parliament or the Abbey closes

Both sites close at short notice: the Abbey for services and state occasions, Parliament for its own business and events. The operator says it contacts you before the tour if it can, and changes made on the day are explained at the start. One recent reviewer found no guides in Parliament over a holiday weekend. Sundays are out for the Abbey, which opens only for worship.

Is it worth $159?

Bought separately, the Abbey's own ticket is £32, about $43, and you would still need a Parliament tour on top. This combo adds two guides and the logistics, and 8 of the 10 latest reviews praise the guides. If Parliament matters less to you, the skip-the-line guided Abbey tour from $100 or the Abbey, Big Ben and Buckingham walk from $44 cost less.

Practical rules

Meet at the Palmerston statue on Parliament Square 15 minutes early. It is a walking tour at a moderate pace, unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Both buildings have security checks, and the Abbey refuses bags over 40 x 30 x 20 cm with no left luggage on site, so travel light.
