What the Galleries add
The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries sit in the 13th-century triforium, reached by 108 steps or a lift in the Weston Tower. They hold more than 300 objects, among them the Liber Regalis, the funeral effigies of kings and queens, the Westminster Retable, England's oldest surviving altarpiece, and the marriage licence of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The standard ticket does not include them; on your own you would buy a separate £5 timed ticket. See the Galleries guide for more.
The tour, step by step
You meet the guide in front of the Abbey shop in Dean's Yard, enter with skip-the-line tickets and tour the Abbey and the Cloisters, then go up to the Galleries. Photography is not allowed in the Galleries. The tour then leaves the Abbey for an outside visit of Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Bridge and Buckingham Palace; the Changing of the Guard is an optional upgrade. You do not enter any of those buildings on this tour.
Is it a private tour?
No. It is a small-group tour of up to 20 people with one Blue Badge guide. For a private guide inside the Abbey, the skip-the-line guided tour sells private options of 2 to 5.5 hours, but without the Galleries; you could add the £5 Galleries ticket at the Abbey afterwards while the Galleries are open (last entry 2:00pm on weekdays).
What reviewers say
With only 18 reviews, read the rating with care. Six of the 10 latest reviews praise the guide by name. One three-star review says the group was not taken to Buckingham Palace or Big Ben as the description promised, so ask the guide at the start how much time the outside part will get.
Rules for the day
Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals cannot join and missed tours are not refunded. Large bags, luggage, baby strollers and non-folding wheelchairs are not allowed. Wear comfortable shoes for uneven surfaces, and note that under-18s must be with an adult.
